Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by challenges with social interaction, communication, and repetitive behaviors. ASD presents with varying degrees of severity and unique strengths and challenges for each individual.
What is ASD?
Definition: ASD is a developmental disorder that affects social interaction, communication, behavior, and learning.
Spectrum: The term “spectrum” reflects the wide range of ways autism can manifest, from mild to severe, and the diverse strengths and challenges individuals with autism may have.
Early Onset: While ASD can be diagnosed at any age, symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.
Neurological Differences: ASD is caused by differences in the brain, leading to unique ways of processing information and interacting with the world.
Lifelong Condition: Autism is a lifelong condition, and individuals with ASD do not “grow out of it.”

- May have co-occurring conditions like ADHD, anxiety, or epilepsy.
- Some individuals with ASD may have intellectual delays, while others may be intellectually gifted.
Diagnosis and Support
There is no specific medical test to diagnose ASD; diagnosis is based on a child’s behavior and development. Early identification and intervention can significantly improve outcomes for individuals with ASD. Individuals with ASD may benefit from various therapies and support services, such as behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy.
